A common measure of sound intensity that is one tenth of a bel on the logarithmic intensity scale. It is defined as dB = 10 * log(P /P ), where P and P are the relative powers of the sound.

For example, dBm indicates a reference level of one milliwatt, while dBu is referenced to approximately 0.775 volts RMS.

The bel was named in honor of Alexander Graham Bell, but the bel is seldom used.
