Sorcerer
Sorcerer is a 1977 American existential adventure thriller film directed and produced by William Friedkin and starring Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal, and Amidou. It is the second adaptation of the 1950 French novel Le Salaire de la peur by Georges Arnaud. It has been widely considered a remake of the 1953 French film The Wages of Fear, the first adaptation of the novel, however Friedkin has eschewed this notion. Recently, numerous outlets, such as American Cinematheque began to perceive it as a standalone film and opposed the "remake" label. Originally conceived as a side-project to Friedkin's next major film, The Devil's Triangle. Initially planned as a 2.5 million dollar movie, during its production the budget became earmarked at 15 million and eventually escalated to $22 million, which was more than double of Star Wars's. The film gained mixed-to-negative critical reception upon its release, and the domestic gross of $9 million did not recoup its costs. The film expenses required a co-production by Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures, with the former handling the U.S. distribution and the latter being responsible for the international release.
