"Hurt" is a song by American recording artist Christina Aguilera, taken from her fifth studio album Back to Basics. It was released on September 19, 2006 by RCA Records as the second single from the album. The song was written by Aguilera, Linda Perry and Mark Ronson and was produced by Perry. Musically, it is a pop ballad which incorporates many instruments including bass, cello, piano, viola and violin. Lyrically, the song describes how one deals with the loss of a loved one. "Hurt" received mainly favorable reviews from music critics, who praised Aguilera's vocal in the song. It was a moderate hit in the United States, peaking at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. Internationally, the song was a commercial success, peaking within the top 10 in several countries and reached number one in Europe. To date, the single has sold over 1.1 million digital copies in the United States alone. An accompanying music video for the song was directed by Floria Sigismondi and Aguilera, portrays the singer as a '40s circus superstar. Aguilera has performed "Hurt" in a number of shows, including the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, Saturday Night Live and her 2007 Back to Basics Tour.
