A versicle is the first half of one of a set of preces, said or sung by an officiant or cantor and answered with a said or sung response by the congregation or choir. For example, in the following opening of the Anglican service of Evening Prayer according to the Book of Common Prayer, the first line is the versicle and the second is the response. In some liturgical books, the symbol "V" or "℣" is used.

It is one of the oldest forms of prayer in Christianity, rooted in the pre-Christian Hebrew prayers of the Psalms used in Temple worship.In many prayer books, the versicles, to be spoken or sung by the priest, and the following responses, spoken or sung by the congregation, are denoted by special glyphs: Versicle: ℣, a letter V crossed by an oblique line — Unicode U+2123 ℣ VERSICLE, HTML entity ℣ Response: ℟, a letter R crossed by an oblique line — Unicode U+211F ℟ RESPONSE, HTML entity ℟
